The story behind this devotion goes way back to the 1600s in Germany. A man named Wolfgang Langenmantel was having serious marriage troubles, and he went to a Jesuit priest for help. During one of their prayers, the priest held up a ribbon used in the couple’s wedding ceremony — all tangled up — and slowly untied the knots while praying to the Virgin Mary. The couple reconciled, and that image stuck: Mary as the one who patiently untangles the knots in our lives.
Fast forward to today, and this devotion has gone global — especially after Pope Francis talked about how much it means to him. There’s even a famous painting of Mary gently untying knots in a long white ribbon while surrounded by angels. People pray to her for all kinds of situations — relationship issues, family problems, financial struggles, anxiety — basically, anything that feels like a knot you can’t fix on your own. The idea isn’t magic; it’s about trusting that Mary, with her motherly care, can help smooth things out and guide you toward peace. So next time you’re feeling stuck, maybe whisper a little prayer to Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. She’s been untying human messes for centuries — and she’s got plenty of patience for yours too. We offer free holy cards with a simple prayer for you to take with you. We also offer a piece of rope that you can tie into a knot at the shrine. Of course, feel free to bring your own. You can make your own novena with this prayer, or look one up online. Of course, you don't have to visit our shrine to practice this devotion of giving your knots to Mary, but if that helps you to remember and start this practice, then come on over.
